Agritourism, Recreation, and Dude Ranches

May 17, 2017 -- Posted by : admin

The words 'dude ranch' can conjure conflicted images in the mind -- like perhaps a group of surfers herding cattle? But the history of the term illuminates quite a bit about this unique western experience which is rising in popularity among travelers looking for unique experiences.

In Theodore Roosevelt's day, the term 'dude' was actually used in a derogatory fashion to refer to soft-handed easterners who came out to the west to see how the 'cowboys' really lived. Over the years, however, the term has lost its negative connotation and now a 'dude ranch' is an essential part of the rising trend of agritourism.

With our selection of large ranches for sale you can generate a solid revenue stream on your investment by opening it up to guests willing to experience the authentic way of life. It is a great way to take full advantage of what your land has to offer. People interested in agritourism are looking to undertake the unique challenges of living and working on a ranch. Horseback rides at dawn to run the ditches or fix the fences, working with livestock, or learning to shoe horses are all parts of the experience these guests are looking for.

Some modern dude ranches are fully recreational, centering all of their offerings on a more vacation like experience. Guests enjoy luxury cabins, gourmet dining and family friendly evening activities. These venues will often have a central theme or activities related to ranch life and outdoor sports. Some are used as base camps for guided hunting trips in the fall, or sport fishing and fly fishing almost year-round. In the winter, many will offer snowmobile trips or back-country ski excursions.

These ‘dude ranch’ types of land use often qualify for various easements, environmental or agricultural in nature, which can preserve the land as well as offer significant tax breaks for the owners.

Whether your legacy ranch is a part-time summer residence, your go-to winter chalet, or a year-round retreat for you and your family, dude ranching and recreational guest opportunities are an excellent way to get the most out of your land.
